New online challenges suit me, so I've really enjoyed learning to use WordPress as a blogging platform for the online edition of the school newsletter.
I'll post information soon on where you can find the
NCS Times online (it's undergoing a name change, too). I think you'll be quite pleased! We've got a lot of good content to upload for this launch, including an AMAZING and hilarious video by James Duduit....
I was really impressed by WordPress. I'm a noob when it comes to this weird php stuff in blog publishing, and I'll admit - the first couple days were scary. I don't really know what I'm doing. Ever. haha. But I can make computers speak my language sometimes, and that helps.
Ryan McAllen installed the WordPress software at the
NCS website (also new - check it out!) and turned me loose in it. This weekend, I found a theme I liked, installed it, activated plugins, installed widgets, downloaded new plugins, and tweaked settings. I don't know how to "hack" but we've got a functioning site at least.

Today I fixed a few more problems, added a Flickr album page built from the NCS Flickr stream and figured out how to moderate blog comments. Tomorrow I need to move the blog to its permanent home on the NCS server and fix all the broken links that will create. (Bleh.)
Crazy how easy it is now to publish online. Obviously that can have downsides too -- like how any lunkhead with an opinion can publish something that looks "official" enough to dupe other people into listening to an uneducated opinion. (Anyone catch the
Zits reference? lol "www.lunkheadwithanopinioncom")
But in general - very cool that people across the world can talk to each other now, pretty easily.
Hit the
NCS Times's new site beginning October 2nd.

I tell ya, if I can find a way to make WordPress offer both "public" and "Protected" posts, I just might switch....
